Welcome to Stop Diabetic Blindness
Diabetes is on the rise throughout the United States. The number of Americans with diabetes is expected to nearly double over the next 30 years. Adults over 70 face the greatest risk. With the projected rise of diabetes comes an equal rise in the rate of blindness caused by the disease when tiny blood vessels that nourish the eye’s retina grow abnormally. The retina contains the “sensors” that convert light to nerve impulses the brain can understand. Diabetic vision impairment occurs when these abnormal blood vessels burst, spilling blood inside the eye and blocking light from reaching the retina. Early intervention is key to preventing vision loss.
Our Mission
“Stop Diabetic Blindness” is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that provides monthly free vision clinics to underserved residents in the Chula Vista and San Diego counties. Since diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, eye exams and early treatment are the best measures in preventing the loss of vision among diabetic patients. The free clinics offer myriad services to meet the individual needs of each patient: physician exams, eye drops, and eye injections.
